no main beam
« on: 09 June 2012, 16:45 »
Iv just finished putting back together my mk2 gti 88 8v, its a standard car apart from single headlight conversion, problem is i dont seem to have main beam or blue light on dash, or headlight flash, i have indicators, there fine. i have side and dip off the headlight switch, but nothing from the dip/main stalk, i bought a new stalk but still nothing, should i feel a click/detent from the stalk when pulling for dip/main headlights? Iv done some checks and i dont seem to have a feed down at the fuse for main beam, should this be permanent when the headlights are on, or is the feed triggered when the stalk is pulled??
Iv tried bridging various connections on the plug on the back of the switch but nothing, i cant find a descent wiring diagram for the headlight system apart from haynes, but the scematic diagram is making me go crosseyed.

Can anyone shed any light where to look or what relays to check, or where else i can check for feeds, as im getting to the stage where im going to burn it out. iv searched here to no avail! pictures would speak a thousand words if there are any going.

cheers guys

You should get a click from the stalks when you pull them... Check the the housing for them isn't broken or ill fitted, as it sounds like its a stalk problem to me...

There are three "Basic" types of stalks (with loads of variations) so also make sure you have the correct ones for the car...

1, Early Small handle & Small Boss steering column ones
2, Mid - Big Handle - CE1 with Big Boss Steering column but no Steering Hazard switch
3, Late CE2 Big Boss with Steering Column mounted hazards...

Relay would be a N0 53 as far as I know but check the Fusebox FAQ's in the Maintenance section...
