Hot Engine?

Just more of a curious question to be fair, my engine get really hot, even if its on for like 5 minutes. The pipes to the radiator and back are to the point where you can not touch them. I would understand on a long journey or more than 5 minutes.

Any particular reason or is this just normal? GTi N/A 1.8

Do you have antifreeze in with the water and is the level topped up. Does it sit at 90 on the thermostat?

Might be your water pump is on it's way out these should be changed at 60k

look at the header tank; water should flow back into it via the highest pipe when the thermostat is open (engine is warm)

If not as Ash says your water pump will need replacing ASAP

i'll check if the water comes back through, yeah temp sits at 90 nicely and never goes above, but to me it seems a lot warmer than 90.

Cars at 147k and not sure when the last belt and pump change was! might invest in that rather soon so i know its done.

I'm not sure how you expected 90 degrees Celsius to feel but I can't touch anything over 50 celsius for any prolonged amount of time, I imagine 90 degrees celsius to be pretty hot...

I posted a similar question and so did someone else within the last few days.

Is it the rocker cover that you refer to as hot?
 
Check the top hose on the coolant that its circulating first and then the top and bottom hose leading to the radiator (both should be hot)
any coolant leaks? dont fill the bottle too much (about an inch above the min level is ok)

And stop driving like a loon, because thats how mine gets so hot

mine used to do this, even after driving for 5 mins. I was advised to change the maf, so I did, and it was much better as I could even touch the manifold, where as before it used to go so hot.

Well it will do. Even at idle you have 13 or so circa. 1000°C combustion events every second acting to heat the block up.
Then you've only got the surrounding air cooling it down, and engine blocks have a hell of a lot of thermal mass.

As long as your coolant remains at a sensible temperature and remains flowing, you are fine.
