Coolant temps
« on: 06 June 2012, 19:52 »
Hi Guys,

Coolant temp gauge says 90 never goes above (it starts at 0 so thats a good sign  )
But the rocker cover gets seriously hot, and if I fill the coolant bottle too high (roughly where the book and G12 signs are) I notice that it slowly looses coolant from the overflow over say a month (not a daily drive maybe used 2-3 times a week)
as there is no MAX sign on the bottle and only a MIN where do you all fill upto?

taken the top hose off the coolant bottle and its pumping so water pump ok, radiator only comes on now and again (hard to hear with a turbo back system  )

any thoughts?

Thoughts at the moment are:
You rocker cover will be heated by the oil splashing from the cams below so should be near the temperature of the oil - 90° or so. Not much cooler than a boiled kettle.
Your water should settle out at about an inch above the minimum line. (2.5 cm) when it is cold - a bit higher when hot. Any extra will be ejected by the overflow and that is as it should be.

Check your top hose when the car is hot (with gloves I guess) and it should feel inflated to about 10 psi. If not the reservoir cap might be leaking.

Cheers,

I'll get a new coolant cap and see what happen.

Mine does that too. I'd you fill it up too much it's like an overflow. It seems to settle where the ridge/seam is on the coolant resevoir.
