Match 1.4 refuses to start

Hello all,

My run around 1.4 match has stopped working.
until now been super reliable, let the missus have a go today as she is just learning to drive(on private land). It seems she tried to pull away in 3rd using the brake instead of the accelerator So the car has stalled with the brakes full on and now the car will not start, is it possible that the timing belt has jumped some teeth as i have spark and fuel but no go, or could there be something else obv that i am missing?

I doubt the cam belt has jumped. Does it turn over ok when trying to start it?

Yes it turns over fine, i only thought timing because it stalled in a high gear and couldn't move, there was a fair bit of noise from the engine(Bottom end?), like when you pull too high a gear up a hill.

So what actuly happened mate? So she tried to pull away in 3rd but used the brake aswell as the accelerator? Is that with the same foot? And it stalled? Is there alot of noise when it turns over from the bottom end still?

Basically she dumped the clutch with her foot on the brake so car the didn't move at all, but the engine sounds normal when you turn it over, just won't fire

Think about the engine mounts being past their best - the engine will have moved on them big time.

So start with the simple stuff and assume a wire will have been moved or pulled. Check all connections in the bay and pay particular attention to the HT lead from the coil, LT leads to it. Pull a plug and check for a spark. (Or pull the cap and use a spare if you have one in the garage).

yeah as stated check that everything is still in place as it should be. wires and so. give it a good once over and see if anything is out of place.

Thanks for the replies, i will check over all the basics when i get it back from the inlaws drive

Finally managed to get up to the car and still no go Checked over all electrical connectors, nothing loose or disconnected. Looking at the throttle body i noticed fuel leaking to the top of the inlet manifold, it looks like the mount has perished and maybe the shaking from the stall was the nail in the coffin as it now moves about a lot, would this be enough to stop the engine firing as i presume the air/fuel mix will be all over the place?
Have picked up a 96 hatch gl tdi in the meantime, same colour and spec as the 2.0 estate, nice pair with a little work so at least i can get about to get the parts and get to the other
