Gti 20v turbo warm starting problem
« on: 05 June 2012, 14:09 »
Hi my 2001 gti turbo starts 1st time when cold and will run fine, the problem comes when i stop for a short period of time and then try to start the car when the engine is warm, it just doesn't want to start, it turns over then will fire up but its very erratic and a lot of black smoke out the exhaust and stinks of petrol, then will clear after a minute and run fine.

What i have also noticed is that after the warm start issue the mpg is down to about 20mpg where i normally get around 28mpg, any help would be appreciated as i`m afraid one day it not going to start.

Hi,

Have a read of this: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=88088.0

Sounds like the temp sender to me, mine did this a few times a couple of years ago, exactly the same symptoms. The faulty sensor tells the car that its still cold even after its warmed up, which leads to overfuelling and a slightly flooded engine when you attempt a warm start, this is also the reason for the strong smell of petrol and poor mpg. I replaced mine and problem solved!

Having said that the best thing would be to get your car scanned for fault codes as a a first step, see here: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=189447.0

Good luck

Hi thanks for the advice, i bought a fault reader off ebay cost me £12 (bargain) plugged it in and sure enough the temp sender fault appeared, Bought a genuine sender for £38, 10 minutes to do the job and the faults gone.
