brake calipers
« on: 03 June 2012, 23:53 »
Hi, i been told by local garage that i need a new caliper for my clipper,  there`s a major rattle when im driving until i begin to brake and the fluid is leaking out too so i imagine he`s right .
The braking performance on this car was always a bit poor, so would there be an upgrade out there that woudnt cost the earth??
thanks all.

Audi 80 coup carriers was the first brake mod I did back in 2000 :shocked:odd you then can use 256mm brakes
Rears you can use a rocco hub set up for rear disc brakes or you can buy some groved drum brakes
The age of the Audi 80 coupe should be around 87 they take 10m bolts for the carrier if they take 12mm its the wrong one might have to confirm your bolt holes as M10 as my mind is not what it used to be!

girling 54 calipers from a mk2 gti fit but you have to get carriers as well as clipperjay said you can then fit 256mm disks, also worth doing is a 22mm master cylinder and 9" servo also from mk2, have a look on mk1 owners club for brake upgrades

hi and thx,
Are the Girling 54 calipers standard on a Mk2 gti and 16v gti?
Where is the 256mm disc taken from?
Also, what function does the carrier have?
Sorry, but my brain is set up in a way that these things have to spelt out to me

Whatever braking system you take off the donnor car/ buying i.e Audi 80 coupe just quote the car when ordering parts so your discs will be 256mm 4x100 stud as you have four wheel bolts it will be 4x100. The other items you will need is a new set of brake pads, brake hoses and splash shields, ironically i'm selling the shields, which are for an Audi 80 disc size, as it will bolt pefectly to a MK1 golf hub.

The carrier all it does is correctly space out the distance from the hub to disc so you have a floating caliper on top to get the required clearance!

Just google MK1 front brake upgrades I'm sure there is loads as I did this back in 2000 so 12 years have gone by and its just standard to upgrade those MK1 brakes these days?

I assume you car is rhd? There is a bar that goes along the bulkhead to servo that flexes under hard braking. On my caddy I measured it, took it off and replaced it with a 12mm solid steel bar. I drilled and tapped both ends of the 12mm bar then screwed and welded in the original ends.  It's mega cheap and stopped the spongey feeling you get half way through pedal travel.

Renew fluid, discs, pads and stainless hoses will make a big difference.

thx for the replies, im going for Girling calipers with good discs and pads with good drums and shoes on the rear.  i will also renew the brake fluid.
The carriers for the calipers are tricky to get cheap, if any 1 has this set up i would be intrested.
thx again.
