Rear suspension noise/movement questions...
« on: 03 June 2012, 14:47 »
Hi

Ive recently fitted new top mounts to the front and rear of my 8v ..

At first i thought it had improved things quite a bit. But after a few days ive noticed a few issues with the rear end.

Its fitted with koni adjustables (set to soft)  on what look like 30-40 koni springs, so i understand its going to be a bit firmer than standard. also ive fitted poly beam bushes

But as i say there are a few issues

Firstly there is a crashy feel and  thudding from the rear suspension when going over bumps, potholes patches of tarmac etc...

(Ive owned plenty of lowered cars over the last 15 years, mainly civic's and 205's and none have been as bad as this)

Secondly there is a horizontal side to side swinging motion when going over some bumps from the rear end. It feels like its shaking its arse around if you know what i mean.

(This bothers me the most really as ive never had any lowered car act like this)

Is the ride on the mk2 Known to be poor when lowered? i had a mk1 years ago but dont remember it being like this.

Are there any things i should be looking at as im stumped, ive removed and refitted the rear suspension twice just to check if i had it all on right.

The only thing i can think is the exhaust is a little loose, and has some side to side swinging movement in it as a couple of hangers are missing. it doesnt catch though and its not hitting the rear beam.

Could the exhaust swinging side to side be making my car wiggle around on the road???

sorry the question is so long but im just trying to give you all the info.

Thanks in advance guys

Dave

Are the polybushes the correct way around, IE large diameter ends both on the inside of the beam.
Also check that the 3 (17mm socket) subframe mounting bolts either side are tight.

Mk2s are solid stabilty wise at the rear end at all ride heights :)

Poly bushes were prothane inserts and only go in 1 way.. i didnt touch any subframe bolts, do you mean the hangers the beam bolts to? i just undid both of the beam bolts and dropped the front of the beam down.

no, the exhaust would not cause your car to wiggle around .

as for the rest of your issues, is it just the REAR TOP mounts you changed ?

I fitted some springs recently and some how the spring wasn't seated correcty in the top mount this caused lots of noise before I realised what had happened. I then had to compress the spring to locate it again.

I changed both parts of the rear top mounts.. Underneath the strut top and the smaller 2 piece one inside the car....  Any ideas?

start with the basics then

have you re checked the tightness of the top nuts ? with weight sat on the wheels ?

No ive not tried it with weight in the car.. Shall do today. .

I just tightened the first of the 2 top nuts until  both the little metal cups met and wouldnt go any tighter.. Is that correct? Is the upper bush meant to be compressed like that?

Agreed also checking the cotter pin on the sub axel for deformation will show any hub bearing movements pushing out.
