1st gear problem

hello ,parked up wednesday all good then thursday having problems trying to get into 1st gear,it just does'nt want to go,goes into every other gear problem free but just won't go up into 1st,if i keep trying it does go in eventully any ideas/suggestions,apart from don't use 1st gear lol(91" gti 8valve if it makes a difference) ,thanks

Mine did a similar thing, it was the gear linkage connectors they are white and they clip over the balls on the rods.  Mine started with 5th gear and just went completely I just reclipped it back in. Have a look might be that

You can get replacement linkage rods from euro car parts or GSF for peanuts if there is play in them, you can also adjust the shift via a 13mm pinch bolt next to the downpipe

thanks for the advice ,i've just replaced the gear linkage rubbers and i've got 1st gear back
