air filter sensor or something?

on the air filter theres a little box and a part where some sort of sensor or plug plugs into the filter, well when mines plugged in the car peforms so sh!t its unreal, as in you put your foot to the floor and its splutters and juders, then suddenly it goes back to normal and shoots off, after about five seconds, also its doesnt tick over normal either, sounds funny idling and when not even accelerating. when you unplu this plug the car runs fine, but im concerned because its obviously mant to be plugged in not left out. the bloke said it started judering and he took it to a mechanic and they unplugged that. i aint got a clue what it is. any ideas??

Yeah Thats The MAF Sensor. (Mass Air Flow)
It tels the ECU how much air is entering the Engine so that the amount of fuel injected can be monitored so that it does not run too rich or lean.
Give the plug a clean, see if it was just crap on the contacts.

Could also take of the air box and have a look inside as there might be crap on the sensor itself.

i've taken the air box off, looked at the filter etc, its all new and clean, also the plug looks clean and i unscrewed the little box n the two prong things that look like the inside of a light bulb if you know what im on about, there clean too. so why is it running ok with it unplugged? if you have any idea.. :embarassed:

If it runs ok with it unplugged the maf sensor is knackered.

Do not get one from ebay, stick with genuine or Bosch

ok, i took the sensor apart n it didn't look knackered, but like i said i don't really know much about it all.. but yeah, i have to leave it unplugged, if not its all over the place constantly, but runs fine when unplugged, so wheree do you suggest i get one of these sensors from if not ebay? as in best price etc,

Try euro car parts or your local bosch agent.

They are fairly expensive so ECP with forum discount is your best bet!

ok, cool. but you're pretty certain it'll be that if it's running fine without it pluggeed in, i know it can't be the air filter or whatever as ive taken it all apart n checked it.. what about the plugs, like a connection or something?
