Gearbox high ratio

Hi there. Got a 2.0 gti with the usual noisy reverse gear. I'd really like to replace the box with a unit with a high final drive; the beast is so torquey it is really undergeared. It has a final drive ratio of about 23 / 1000. What I would really like is a box with 30 / 1000 as in the mk4 diesel I drove the other day. Is there a mk3 box with this kind of high ratio? My old mk3 diesel umweldt was only about 23 / 1000, but that is about the only other mk3 I know.

depends if you have an 8v or a 16v, as they have different box's

afaik the ASD from the 1.9 diesel has the highest final drive, thats on 02a though so wouldn't fit an 8v. Id guess the most suited to what you want from an 8v would be from a diesel as well

Cheers people. Bigger wheels does not get you much of an improvement. going from 14 to 16 inch with the same profile means wheel diamater goes up about 2 inches, say 23 to 25 inches, which makes less than a ten percent difference. The difference between my car and the mk4 diesel I drove is about 30 percent. -- Well, unless I go to 20 inch tyres with about the same profile!! That gives 25 percent. But even if one could afford such mega wheels you would need some very big arches.

I should have thought to say my car is an 8v, N reg, cabrio.

Thanks for the link. I can't really get started with this page as I don't know what gearbox is fitted as standard to this car, can't get under it to look at the bellhousing, and I can't find any references to the mk3 gti.

Good job this wide world had a diverse bunch of people with differing opinions or we would all be driving the same car as you.

Beast - maybe not for me but if you have come from a 1.2 OHV Corsa then yes. Powerful no. But torquey yes. Peak torque is at low revs so that torque and not power dominate the driving experience. I like that actually.

I have a fond memory of the old Ford Kent (crossflow) 1.6 engines that used to make their power the same way. My 8V is very similar.

Thanks everyone, maybe with the exception of thai-wronghorse. I never said it was a beast. I said it is torquey, and it is, especially at very low revs - 1000 to 1500 it is way far more torquey than my 1.9 umweld, which I consider remarkable!

Now I have all this information I have a new question. My box is a 020, and the boxes with the gearing I want, ASD and CTN, are 02A. I  believe their natural habitat is in Passats. But Googling about I discover that this is a bit of an involved conversion, cable to hydraulic and linkage to cable. This post seems to cover all the details but this is way more work than I have the time for. Converting the 02A box to cable and linkage seems a better bet. Does anyone know of a walkthrough for these two operations?

As well as ASD and CTN I found two more supposedly with the right final drive, CHU and CYP but I have no info on which model box they are. Chances are of course they are 02A or 02J.

I was only giving you my own personal opinion on what you had posted earlier, which of course was also your own personal opinion.
