I'm a bit late with this but I can always get a lot more MPG without using the cruise. As others have said its all about the anticipation and reading the road which the cruise can't do.

I only ever use it on those average speed camera stretches.

Well I'm now back from my hols  Devon is such a lovely part of the country, myself and the family loved it so much at we've already paid to return next year..

On the economy front it wasnt that good at all really, I get better round town doing stop start driving which is weird...on the way there I didn't use cruise and I wasn't going particularly fast...70-75 at most as my mrs is the worst passenger(and I mean the worst) watch that car in front, he/she is like 50mtrs in front on me for goodness sake, oh and watch that lorry parked up, they might pull out on us....Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

You get the picture lol

Anyways doing 70-75 without cruise I was averaging 46-47mpg and with cruise(on the way back) it was the same...
I think its broken...

Any how I enjoyed the drive and the hols none the less....

those 1/4 hills in devon always screw my economy up, I just can't go up those things slow...

Glad you had a good time, my spend in fuels plummeted this week, been told I can't drive as I have a busted tendon, grrrrr.  Worst part is missed a very big racing event in my sporting calendar, much to the annoyance of the rest of my squad.

GRRRRRR!!!!

Still yey, no fuel to pay for, wooo!!!!!

I can't get over how good the 140 is on fuel. I was doing my best to see how many miles I could get from a tankfull until yesterday when the day didn't exactly go to plan. I did the 100 mile trip to Inters after a delayed start, so let's just say I was making up for lost time. Got to Bruntingthorpe and had a look at the mpg expecting it to be hammered, but not too shabby. An indicated 50mpg for the trip

My 170 was close to 50-55 on the way there, thanks mostly to the 2nd part of the journey which was a little more relaxed. I only managed 40mpg on the way home  :lipsrsealed:

I went steady on the way back and got 62mpg. That's only a 20% increase in mpg over the "making progress" journey in the morning, so got me thinking I really shouldn't be thinking that pushing on is costing me that much more.

The Golf is a totally different beast to my V6 TDI Passat. There is a vast difference between steady cruising and pressing on mpg in that.

No, I don't think it's broken, Mr GTD. It will take some time to fully loosen up (mine's not there yet either). Gives you an excuse for driving it more!

I saw 63mpg at the weekend, just going with the flow of the traffic on an A road over a distance of about 25 miles. I think the best I've seen so far on a long-ish journey (airport run, 150 miles) was 64-ish mpg. MFD is currently showing just a shade under 54mpg for overall distance covered since it last reset itself a couple of months ago.

Welcome back, glad you had a good holiday!
