Gear selection problem
« on: 26 May 2012, 13:51 »
I've recently replaced the all the gear linkage bushes, relay shaft & a weighted shift rod as the feel of the gear change was crap. Job done & its much better......................except, & I can't understand this, after a few miles & the car has warmed up I loose 5th gear! Really struggle to get it which is strange because when its cold its perfect!
Help!!!

Cheers,
Steve

When I changed mine it showed previously hidden problems. First of all, see if you can get your hands on an alignment too. Maybe your gearstick just needs straightening up as its sitting slightly too far to the left. Otherwise try a gear oil change, may make gear selecting a little better if its box related.

The alinment of the shifter rods are bent
The big rubber golf ball bush is worn
Somewhere on the exhaust is loose and banging on the selector rods creating mis-alinement.
Fifth gear has shat itself
Clutch bearing or clutch rod is done.
One Loose clutch bolts
Clutch cable tension loose.
There are a few more but its a dark art the fifth gear I've done four out of the seven and told a mate to change the gear box out when I gave up  :lipsrsealed:

Many thanks. A few things to look at at! I'm changing the clutch cable tomorrow (cheapest option ) as the clutch feels stiff & biting point is high. That said the clutch pedal stop is missing/broken so that won't help either. After that I'll check alignment. I know there is a 'how to' on changing the bushes & mention is made of alignment. But what exactly is the process?  :undecided:
Cheers,
Steve

Changed the clutch cable & replaced the clutch pedal stop. The new cable (Q&H as oem no longer available) has smoothed the pedal out & made it feel lighter but now the clutch feels 'weak.' With the stop replaced the biting point is now right at the top of pedal travel. Fifth gear still difficult to find. Alignment next but ultimately think it needs a clutch too.
