ive tried to fix my drivers side elec window cos it packed in the other month, ive done searches on this site and got various info ranging from replacing the motor to giving it a good wack and some wd40? so i tried the latter, with my finger pressing the switch i sprayed the unit with wd40 and tapped it a few times, the thing is when i press the button you can hear it slowly trying but not accutally moving it? and after all the slow pushing sounds it will actually move the window a millimeter up, the motor was getting quite warm also when i kept my finger pressed and it wasnt moving it, do i need to replace the whole unit or.....?

Sounds to me like you'll need to replace the whole mechanism.  It's not a major job and you can get one on eBay for about £30.  It's also an easy enough job to replace.  Remember the motor is at least 13 years old so it's not surprising that it should go, especially on the drivers side.

If you can open the housing get in there with the WD40 and clean out all the old grease & dirt, then regrease the runners and housing.  Sorted the windows on my girlfriends AX :)

does anyone have a clue to do this? i had a look the other day and it doesnt seem to have any screws where i could un do it? also what do i do with the black springy parts coming off it? how do i remove them?

No idea sorry, it may be you cant actually open it! I know you cant open the rear wiper motor housing easily anyway.

Perhaps if you sprayed a load of WD into one of the cable holes and gave it a good shake?  :grin:

The golf window motors are complete with the winders as they are built in as one unit. This has now superseeded part number and a vag replace is a mechanism and a motor!! The unit doesnt split its sealed so you will need to get one off ebay or a breakers yard... one thing to note is both 3 and 5 door front motors and mechanisms are the same. If your told other thats not right.
