After 8-9 years without a Vw (1.8 mk1) I recently got myself a lovely 1990 5dr gti 8v in what seems to be a lesser seen Ld7v grey silver. ( love the colour, will add pics over the weekend)
I bought it as a running project and plan to restore it to the way VW had intended, plus a few tweaks of course.
Outside Its been fully colour coded and smoothed, which will be returned to standard. But ill be staying with the big bumpers.
Inside its missing the 2 front seats (blue and yellow stripes) and somebody has kindly fitted some velour driver/glx seats maybe? So again ill be hunting down some originals and putting them back in.
Underneath its got Koni or Spax adjustable suspension ( not coils) and im happy with these, ride is a little choppy over bumps but im thinking bushes are to blame and also the 2 front top mounts are split and moving.
polybushes in the wishbones / rear beam and some new top mounts should have this sorted i hope.
The wheels are 14" BBS off a BMW i think 185-60-14 are just not my cup of the though so ive purchaced some 15" BBS and im going to run 195-45-15 i think. Just need to find the centre caps to match..
The engine is totally standard and until today ran without any issues, Ive posted in the Mk2 section if anybody can help me out.. Please...
I do want to do something with the engine but want to be a little different as 20vt seems to be the obvious choice.. Maybe a V5 170ps.. has it been done much??
Anyway ill add photos over the weekend, and again if your good with engines please have a look in the Mk2 section for me, any advice would be much appreciated
