HELP!! my car wont turn off!!
« on: 25 May 2012, 13:59 »
about 2 months ago i picked myself up another mk2 gti 8v, to use as a runner while i work on my other one. its a c reg, so early spec, and is in lovely condition.

but after having owned the car for about 2 weeks, it suddenly started not turning off. as soon as i connect the battery, the handbrake light will be on, i turn on the ignition and obviously the lights go on, and i turn it off and they go off, but once i turn the engine on, and then turn the key to the off possition, the lights stay on and the car just carries on running!!

i have tried so many things and still cant locate the probem. i have tried a new ignition switch, i bipassed the barrel, ive disconected the imobiliser, cleaned all the earths i can find, (only managed to find 3 so far though). another issue, im not sure how relevent, the car was running the other day for approx 20 mins, with the key in, and then it just cut out, im not sure if the altenator is charging the battery, and if this would affect the ignition problem at all?

I have 3 golfs but i have to cycle to work!!  :undecided: please help!

Sounds like electrical and you might have a live going through a neutral wire that supplies the ignition system?
I would start taking a good look at the steering column and fuse box area for anything not right?
You could start pulling fuses to see if it makes any difference, but can cause damage if you dont know what you are doing?

That's the only problem I'm fine working on the mechanical side of it but when it comes to electrics I'm afraid of doing more damage than good! Do you know of any good/mk2 specific auto electricians in the Surrey area, mainly Thames Ditton? Thanks.
