Quality of your paint ?

The paint on my Mk6 is crap, being blunt.
It's got a lovely shine...but it's paper thin, barely covered in places, and chips off if you look at it too long.
My car had 11,000 miles on it, doesn't get used for commuting, there isn't a Motorway for over 100 miles etc...so it's not getting heavy usage.

By comparison, I have a Mk3 GTI 16v that's been in my family since new, it was used as a daily commuting car for the first 5 years of it's life, has 86,000 miles on it...and it has less stonechips than the Mk6. The Mk3 is 16 years old.

Don't get me wrong...the Mk3 isn't perfect and the wings/tailgate are rusting (but so are many Mk5s!) but the paint quality is in a different league.


+1 totaly agree its really bad on the MK6 esp in Candy white




I am deepy disappointed with how the Mk6 paint is holding up.

Sorry for digging out an old thread, but was the resolution to this issue for those who have returned their Golf's to the dealer? I've just finished detailing the wife's cab and the front end is shocking. She assures me that she's not driving up the arse of other cars which may explain the chips but the front bumper has a look of a water reflection in it but everywhere is bone dry(I know that's hard to believe). Not happy!

i was driving along yesterday and the road suddenly stopped for road works - tons and tons of that loose chippings and tar sh!t all over. literally a few inches deep. it was a joke.

no way was i driving thru that so did a u turn but while wailting for a break in the traffic wagons and cars went by me kicking up dirt and gravel really close to my car . i thought my car was going to end up getting battered with stone chips.

for the next couple of miles all i could hear were stones pinging off the bottom and side off my car! horrendous. thankfully i have mud flaps on the front which i think saved ALOT of damage.


got it home and washed it and found (touch wood) no stone chips but a few horrible tar spots which i polished off.


i dont believe the councils can get away with these sh!te road repairs.



i have maybe 2 or 3 stone chips on my front bumper and a coulpe on the bonnet and windscreen but i always make sure I'm not following cars too closely.

te paint on the bumpers feels really soft though. if you rub a bit of tar/dirt off the bumpers with your fringier nail you can feel it is very soft compared to the panels.

Has anyone else had issue with the quality/thiness of the paint on your car? I have 2 stone chips on my bonnet & 3 what looks like small tears in the paint on the bumper/diffuser, not happy at all  i have only had the car since the 1st of March 

VW's do tend to chip easy.

+1 mate, to the point where a Lafarge lorry chipped my windscreen cos the driver thought he'd overtake me - knob! They've accepted liability and are going to replace the windscreen.

I just got a stone chip on my bumper.  Who would you recommend?  I heard 'chips away' are good....

Just be careful with chips away as I believe that they are all franchised. Might be worth speaking to ya dealer and see who they use for smart repairs I.e. small, non body shop work.

i had a paint pen for my clio with a buff pad thing on the end.

you touched the chip in thick, kept it for 15 mins and while the paint is nearly dry you wet the buff pad thing and rub it over the repair to flatten it off

worked really well. once done the stone chips were invisible. really good idea


i have a VW one for my car but it doesn't have the buff pad thing.


i might buy another reanult one and use that.
