16v question erm help
« on: 24 May 2012, 21:22 »
Spent more time on the golf today, so today I flushed the coolant then concentrated on that really bad smell I can't seem to get rid of

I noticed under the steering colum there's a pipe that leads to what looks like the back of the speedo that's leaking. Had the scuttle panel cover off and it passes through down to the gearbox and sits behind the clutch cable.

So I'm pretty sure this is my smell as its dripping down onto the steering colum and stinks

Question is what is this pipe and are they prone to leaking? Also the pipe was right down near the bottom of the engine and sure it should run on long the top.

Got 2moz off so cracking on with it wouldn't mind some advice please guys

It does look and feel more like a cable but its pi**ing oil from the back of the clocks. Does oil run to the back?

No but it can siphon it from the gearbox that would explain the smell

Take a picture of it and someone will tell you what it is!

Oil doesn't run to anywhere in the back... Shouldn't be running out the clocks for sure

I'd go with that, never seen it happen but gearbox oil smells disgusting and the speedo cable goes where you described....

Dam this doesn't sound good, so I've ran it along the top of the engine bay and with it hanging down before I'm thinking its dragging crap up from may be a previously over filled gearbox. This is so strange using my blackberry but I'll try getting a picture up 2moz. And yes its really smelly not pleasant to drive my mrs won't even get in the car with me :-(

There was a case on here before and thats what was happening, the cable was drawing up GB oil and peeing it all over the car...

I seem to remember it was the seal around the box and a new cable fixed it - BUT don't hold me to that do a search & you have to be careful when swapping the cable as there is a small part that can fall off into the box... I'm Not a Mechanic but it's what I've read....
