Oil Leak
« on: 09 June 2005, 00:38 »
My 1996 Golf GTI 8v has an oil leak coming from the gearbox (underneath of the box is wet with oil).
Could this just be the gasket?

Need help if you can, 'my mechanic' is on hols and I need to order the bits so he can do the work staright away when he comes back.

are you sure its the gearbox and not coming from somewhere above it and dripping down from there before becoming visible?

Is it gearbox oil or engine oil? Gearbox oil has a very distinctive smell. Is the clutch starting to slip at all?

Now you menton it, yeah - the clutch has felt a bit different this last few weeks...not so much slipping but very snappy.

Didn't used to be like that....

If the oil doesn't smell like gearbox oil then it looks like your crankshaft oil seal may be suspect. Gearbox off job

As Slick says though, make damn sure its not coming from elsewhere first..............you don't want to go to all that expense only to find its been tracking down from the rocker box cover gasket or something as equally trivial (in comparison).

The oil is actually coming from the driveshaft seals, and finding it ways down to the bottom of the box...but it does have a new problem - and it is the crankshaft seal.
Done a home service on it (well, my mate did most of the work) and now its got clean oil in (the stuff in it was really thick and black) oil is dripping from the plate betwen the engine and gearbox.

Took it to a guy my mate knows, and he said "it can't be the crank seal", got it up in the air...."oh sh!t - it is the crank seal".

So, more expense...and more grief from the Mrs cos my car is costing money.
