i have just replaced my sump. it was £37 new delivered. beware if you dont have decent tools. there are 2 allen key bolts hidden and they are a b!tch to get to.

there are 2 types of sump. one has an oil sensor fitted and one does not soi make sure you get the right one

Needs to meet VW specifications I think mate. I'm not sure if the Asda oil does?

There's very little difference in price really so it's worth going for OEM oil, 1.8T's are notorious for building up sludge so its worth using good oil which meets all criteria set by VW.

this was the reason why i said i didnt know the ratings for the asda oil

so your telling me a 10w40 semi synthetic is better? i very highly doubt it.

check a ratings and pick which one covers your car. i have 5w40 fully synthetic a3 in mine

Just to add - if you know someone with a Costco card, they sell Mobil 0w40 'New life' for £29.89 for 5 litres.

I have this in my car currently.  Previously had Castrol Edge 5w30, which is £35 from ASDA, but its only 4 litres.

Castrol didnt need topping up over 6000 miles, where as the Mobil had needed topping up once.  But that may be because the Mobil has exclusively done motorway speeds and the Castrol did local miles.

halfords oil castrol edge 5 40w = £60

May be expensive but is defo worth it, people put cheap oil in & wonder why they have so many problems with their cars. I have only ever used castrol in my Mk4

VW only recommend who ever they have a deal with at the time, i wouldnt go just by their recommendation
