Which golf do you have bud? if its a 1.4/1.6 ive been told they have what most people call Choc gear boxes I went to test drive a 1.6 about 2 years ago and it had the same problem so i decided not to buy it, a friend of mine got it in the end, about 8 months later gearbox went. I dont know what caused it tbh his driving is terrible so might of been that, but when i did research onit i was told the gear linkages might need tightening or the a gearbox mount? good luck pal.
