My mate has BF3, but it's not as simple as just popping it in and playing online is it? you need to buy the frigging online thing. 

if your friend hasn't activated the online pass which comes with any new copy then you're ok. If not then you'll be stung for either 800 or 1200 msp

Or you can get a one off 24h temp pass from origin. Really easy to do
