MFA and implications
« on: 20 May 2012, 01:33 »
I have a couple of faults showing on the MFA and would like to get a handle on the implications.

The oil temp does not show - just ---. Assume it could be the oil temp sender or just the MFA itself, If the oil temp sender is bust will this mean the radiator fan won't kick in. I'm sure I've been told before that the two are connected somehow.

Also the mpg guage is showing very low readings -  circa 10 mpg and although the car is pretty new to me I rekon thats wrong based on guesswork and fuel guage readings. I take it this is either the mfa itself or a leak in the vacum hose to the mfa. Will this affect the running of the car if its a leak.

Car seems to be running fine although I've not seen nor heard the fan cut in yet.

Lots to do =  only day 4 with the car.

thanks for your help

The oil sender and rad fan are independant. If you look at your rad from the front, on the bottom right corner there should be a plug going into the rad which measures the temp of the water and makes the fan kick in.
My best guess would be the sender is faulty for the MFA. As far as I know if the MFA is faulty the whole box would be covered in all possible line. The oil temp only appears above 50 degrees though, about 5mins of driving, if under 50 it will just show ---.

For me, the MPG has also never been right. Mine never goes higher than 17, even though I average around 35. Main cause is a vacuum leak, make sure all vacuum hoses are fine or replace all. I think 2 meters cost about £6 from the stealers, or use silicone hoses. I have just yesterday found a leak around the inlet manifold, that might explain why my MPG also doesn't work, be interesting to find out when i've done the job.

Hi. Thanks for the response CanisLupus .

Did get the fan going - started up right in half temp mark. So first need to see if its the oil temp sensor or the wiring. Is there a way of testing the wiring?. Otherwise I guess I just need to get hold of a new sensor?

Any further help on getting the MPG feature sorted would be most appreciated.

thanks once again

I have the exact same problem with my MFA so would be interested to find out the solution when you find out!

What kind of MK2 have you both got? A can tell you which vacuum hoses to trace for an 8v, on a 16v I unfortunately don't have any idea.

Well I can only go by my 8v GTi, forgot to ask you if you have a K-Jet or what, but i'll post this anyway, I assume it is different on the carb models.

1. Looking at the side of your airbox, at the very bottom there should be 1 line running to the side top part, there are two inlets, it should go to the lower one.

2 & 3 & 4. Just above that there should be your 2nd vacuum hose. This one runs over the airbox to a Y splitter, from which 1 part goes into the fuel (EGR?) valve (round thing next to the injector rail) and the other side runs to the right port of the throttle body.

5.Looking at the throttle body where no. 4 just went into, just left of that port should be another which should be blocked by a rubber cap.

6.On the back of the throttle body (opposite the other 2) there should be another port which is blocked off.

7.If you look at the right hand side of the intake manifold, there is another vacuum line which comes off the brake booster line. This line then leads to the MPG vacuum gauge on your clocks.

Also you should check all rubber intake hoses for cracks, splits, holes ect. Including the main one from the airbox. Take it off turn it around in your hands and check everything. Other hoses would be the one to the ISV, from ISV to Intake, booster line and PCV valve.

I think that was all :)

If everything is fine, one could assume something is wrong with the vacuum thing on the clocks itself, how high the chances of that are I don't know!

Cheers
