Does Arch rust get picked up on MOT??
« on: 19 May 2012, 23:39 »
Just had the golf I bought recently put through an mot, few bits needs doing but nothing major reported by the garage. just wanting to confirm if the arches were rusting they'd pick up on that even if its under the plastic trims??
I'd imagine the sills would be picked up on, just by having so many cars fail due to sill rusting away.. but just wondering if the arches would be spotted during the test as well, just as you can't get under them without drilling out the pins??
No report of it from the garage, but never trusted a garage enough to not wonder..

What bits need drilling out please to remove the wheel plastic housing? The inner housing is bolted on the body/wings, there are only 2 or 3 clips and those you can just pull out and even re-use.... You'll have a lot of rotten leafs etc back there, always worth clearing out!

Rusted arches are not an MOT fail, unless the bottom end is through (but at that stage your sills will be as well)...

I am assuming he means the plastic outer over arches, as in the gti style arch trim.

These are riveted on through the lip of the metal arch.

No garage is going to remove the rivets to inspect the arch condition on an mot, I have known of mk3's with absolutely hanging arches go through the mot with the rot hidden by the trims (one owner reattached his trim with velcro before the MOT!)

ROFL, ghetto fixes

That's what i mean, would be a ball ache to remove the rivets, i don't want to drill them out as i think for now i want to keep the trim.. there should be a way to remove the wheel arch cover and look at the arches from the inside, no? ill have a look at them that way.

I used small black self tappers and washers to put the rear ones back on, some use 'gripfill' type products but i thought there was too much of a gap between the trim and the arch to use this effectively, if you take the trims off and you have no rust i would leave them off as you are much less likely to have any problems in the future and it does seem to look tidier.
