Golf GTi MK3 exhaust manifold removal, problems

Ok, im in the man cave, struggling to hell getting this apart.

Cant seem to get the heat shield off between the inlet/exhaust manifold. Can get to and undo the 12mm and the one 13mm nut but the 'middle' of the 3 (13mm) nut wont budge for shizzle!!
Any ideas? Space is very limited, can only get in there with a 1/4" on an extension but the socket doesn't seem to want to sit on the nut! Grrrrrr

what mad4vw's did for me was to drop the engine and pull it forward. like that you got tonss of space. front engine mount comes off, gearbox mount loosened and rear engine mount loosened.
