What Engine Codes Can I Use ??

I have a MK4 1.4 16V engine code AHW which is duff and the cheapest option is to fitted a 2nd hand engine rather than a crank regrind, shells & rings, my question is what engine codes can I use as a replacement, as the top end is OK could I use other engine codes and simply fit my head or are the water / oil ways different?

Any help greatly appriciated.

cheepest one is to fit a 1.4.


anything more and your going to get raped for insurance no doubt, also alot of work converting a 1.4 to a 1.8t. dont see the point when you can just buy a 1.8t.


and as far as i know the heads are different

Yes I dont want to fit anything but a 1.4 as you stated too much work and £s & rather buy an origional 1.8T later when I have this one repaired,but was wondering what engine codes of the 1.4 I can use? If I can use any code that would be easier for me to locate one, also seen a lot of blocks for sale but again just want to know what I can & cannot use

I know on the polo 1.4 they use the con rod/piston etc off a 1.6 avy polo
But I wouldn't know on a golf , lots of info on clubpolo about this ,
