Rear Shock - Shaft pushing through very high
« on: 15 May 2012, 08:36 »
High Guys,

Sorry for the untechnical terminology here I just wanted to check what this issue may be. My RDS shock seems to have a fault as the rod part that you can see under the rubber cap inside the boot as pushed up really high and knocked the parcel shelf side support off!

When driving it has a constant rattle when going over bumps from what I think is the washer and constantly sits very high, going even higher when driving.

I thought maybe the susspension spring has gone but cannot really look untill the weekend. Anyone know what this is more than likely? The shocks were replaced about 3 years ago. What would cause the shaft to push constantly high?

Thanks

I think from memory they have a circlip at the top, sounds like that is broken.

Whatever happens park it up for now.

Sounds like your top mount has failed mate. By the sounds of it your rod has pushed its way throught the top mount. So you will be just sitting on the coil spring with no damping. The rattle is probably the the rod flapping about. Needs sorting ASAP and I wouldn't drive it like that

Bummer! Easy job to fix? Will I have to remove the shock etc?

What number on this diagram would the circlip be?

Cheers

And yes you have to take the shock absorber off the car,not hard job though if everything goes to plan.

So the entire weight of the car bears down on these circlips?

Can I purchase this circlip anywhere online?

Tha part number appears to be: 8D0 512 097. I found VW Heritage sells them as snap rings:

http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Snap-ring_act_shop.product_pID_48231431_lang_EN_country_GB.htm

Would this be suitable?

So does all rear shocks have these? Or is it just the ones he has? Didn't see a circlip when removing my shocks and putting my coilys on or is this a diferant shock?

Yep number 21 mate, happened to me.
Bought some boge shocks....uncle fitted them (hes a hgv mechanic) he couldn't understand what was going on......then he realised when comparing them to the old shocks.
You have to order them seperatly apparently, i took my car to an ATS kind of place, they put them on for me....and my cars rear sits lower to the ground now....feck knows what they did, i just got really pissed off with it all. You order shocks, i expect all the bleeding parts to be included!!!!!
