help!! broken dipstick guide
« on: 12 May 2012, 18:22 »
Hi all u 2.0 lovers.

Did a thermostat change this morning only to find the dipstick guide had snapped in three places. Leaving the bottom part exsposed. Is it possible that this will suck air into the engine? And are they an easy fix? looks tricky.

If you've snapped the dipstick guide there will be pieces of plastic now floating with your oil which can block up an already old oil pick up screen causing low oil pressure which may result in the destruction of your engine. You can ignore it and just replace the pick up tube guide but obviously you run the risk.

And no  it will not "suck air into the engine" lol
It's an oil pick up tube, it will do the same thing as when you open your oil filler cap with the engine on (blow air out) and no this will not be a problem so long as no foreign objects fall into your engine.

Ultimately what you should do is remove the rest of the dipstick guide, drop the oil and oil filter, remove the sump, clean the oil pickup, and remove all the little bits of broken orange dipstick guide from the bottom of the sump and anywhere you can get to. Put the sump back, new oil, oil filter and buy a new dipstick guide from VW dealer. It just pushes on to fit.

You can get them off ebay for £3.00 delivered. Like said above if its shattered then bits will be in the engine and need to really be removed. Happened to my 1.8t a while back but it was a clean break so I didn't bother dropping the oil immediately.

Yes ive seen them on ebay thanks. Managed to pick one up from davmac this afternoon for an extra two quid. Shall fit in the morning. Apparently it happens all the time on these ageing mk4's.
