try oil 1st, depends on how dry it was, might quiten it down. may be 2nd hand box time though buddy

In terms of noise, not a big deal, not that noticeable.  Hypothetically, if the bearings are worn due to low oil, the oil was topped up and then run for a while, what would happen?  Would it just get worse until the box failed? If so then that would be the point to change box?

Thanks

P

Out of interest, does it have the same whine in all of the gears, just one, a couple and is it purely engine speed related, doing it at the same revs in whatever gear it does it in? Also, can you repeat the whine with the clutch in or it not in gear?

I notice it most in 2nd and 3rd, maybe because at 2k revs the engine/road noise is enough to drown it out. It seems to be engine speed related, although again its hard to tell as it may be present between 10-40mph but I just happen to be in 2nd/3rd mostly at these speeds.  I never notice it at motorway speed, only around town.  There is no whine when stationary/ revving in neutral, and i think the whine reduces/disappears when the clutch is in, although this is hard to be sure of....

If they are loose they catch gearbox end or dash end still work eventually it will go.
I didnt push one on properly speedo still worked but made a noise!
Easy to pull out and inspect for play and fraying.

I've experianced something simular and all it was the brake shield I had tighten too much and it was scraping the disc at sompoint It took me to jack the car up take the wheel off and watch what was happening. Don't recomend it as its dangerous as hell!

10mm on gearbox holds that in. if oils topped up it could last ages and then no need to change box till it goes, have you tried going down the road and putting it in neatral to see if noice stays or go? or lift front up on axel stands (or ramp and run it in 1st and listen to the diff (or where noise is coming from)

Yeah I tried putting in neutral but it was hard to say, the road noise makes it difficult to tell.  I think it reduced but this may be due to the drop in revs...

tyr putting her on some ramps then to listen to the diff, then theres no road noice, and u can get undernieth and pin point the noice, see if theres a oil leak coming from the gearbox anywhere, normally the diff will be leaking from somewhere.

Seems like a good plan, it's going into garage in a week so I'll report back

Thanks all
