I've used Euro Car Parts for tappets, they were about 5 quid each plus VAT, no problems at all, highly recommended.

Mine are also noisy, will replacing them cure the problem or is it likely to come back?

Also how long do they take to fit

Replacing them should cure it.
Fitting time depends on engine, 8v is easy, 16v takes a bit more stripping down.

Keep changing the oil every 4-5k with Quantum semi-synth and a decent oil filter (Genuine/Mann/Bosch/Hengst) and they won't need changing.

10 000 mile service intervals clog them up.  They unclog eventually if you keep with clean oil.

After 80k miles they will clog up regardless.

Not sure that you can put a fixed mileage on that '6'. If an engine has had an oil change every 5,000 then surely you would expect those hydraulic tappets to last longer then one thats only had one every 10,000? Of course there are other variables that can be thrown into the question too, such as how hard the engine has been thrashed, what oil has been used etc..........

As a sidenote, the ones in Hazels Audi (VW 1800 engine) have done 178,000 miles and are fine.......I've done the valve guide oil seals but the hydraulic tappets are nice and quiet and still going strong  Just a shame she can't keep petrol in the tank.........doh

Agreed.
However you won't appreciate the difference until you have changed the tappets.
You won't believe how quiet the engine will be
