New Pope smoke
« on: 06 June 2005, 20:11 »
Hi guys,

Mate's 8V is popping white smoke at the moment and burning about half a litre of oil a month.  What is the problem and rough cost of sorting?  Has 143k on the clock and has been well looked after, no leak from the rocker cover to speak of.

He doesn't have the money for a new engine at moment, but hoping it is not that serious.

Cheers.

Was wondering about that, but apparently no sign of mayo under the filler cap.  Valve seats?

So that would indicate that the head gasket is on the way.....  will check under his filler cap again.  Thanks!

i had a nova once (no jokes please) there was loads of white smoke on start up and the coolent level kept dropping, no mayo though! but in the end it was the head gasket, had that replaced and all was fine!

Do a compression test to see if any of the bores are down. If two next to each other are lower than the others than a headgasket is the most likely cause.

Check the colour of the expansion tank as well. If it looks like chocolate milkshake then its head gasket time
