I'm now keeping my car in a lock up
« on: 04 May 2012, 01:23 »
Right I got the keys to the garage I'm keeping my car in today.... She's parked in there all happy and dry as we speak. It's literally around the corner from my house.... Only thing is it is going to cost £50 a month for the pleasure. Last week when I found out this convenient and close garage was available I nearly bit the blokes arm off! Now I'm parting with the cash I'm starting to have second thoughts :( do I really need it?? Your thoughts please :)

Depends really, if its £500 worth of 8v I wouldn't pay £600 a year to house it..

I'd say if you intend to keep the car tucked up, all clean and shiney, under a cover in the garage and just bring it out every other sunny sunday, then I'd say yes. It's definately worth it.

If you use your car daily in all weathers, you will probably be cleaning it weekly anyway, so it won't matter so much if it gets dirty. If that is the case, I would see the £50 as a tank of fuel every month.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Have you signed a contract with the lock up owner? If not at least you can cancel at any time,
We have a garage x2 cars. I no how you feel. I'd say if you alarm it up to the sky and steering lock it then your moneys going towards your car parked up elsewhere as well. Although a lock up is a good idea but more hassle for you.

I worry more about mine when its in a car park or parked up outside work, there's some right dirty thieves about.

Put a diskloc on it, it ain't going no where.  Chances are if it good condition after 20 year as a daily car its not going to fall part because you leave it out in the rain?  I've got a garage at my house and don't put mine in it,  cans of paint bikes falling on it etc,  scraping it on the way in struggling to get out of it.  Keep polished and well wax oiled, you could have it super guarded once a month for 50 notes or a track day every couple of months.

+1

If its in regular use then no. Not good to put a car away wet in a garage, it takes ages to dry and corrodes as it does. Terrible for making brakes stick. And in winter your better giving it a wash/rinse more often and keeping it outside. If its regularly used.

If its a minter/show piece then you have to decide if its worth £600 a year to store it. Thats a lot of new parts each year!

Cool thanks some good points here.... I haven't signed a contract but paid a month up front so I've got until the end of may to make a decision. Hmmmmm

How big is it? £50 could be a bargain. I was offered a single parking spot the land owner classed as a ''unit'' and was quoted £150 a month.

Couldnt even get 2 cars in the space. Total rip off and he has not found anyone who will pay that price.

You could sub let the space if its big enough for more than 2 cars?

:)

£50 a month sounds a bargain, remember insurance should be a bit less if garaged too and you'll have peace of mind that it is less likely to be nicked, coined or bashed by careless parkers. Having somewhere to work might also cut your garage bills as it will be easier to do your own maintenance.

I can't wait to move house and get my Mk2 tucked away with somewhere dry to work.
