Got the sack today !!
« on: 03 May 2012, 16:51 »
I was working for an agency at saint gobain pipelines and have been there for quite a while,Yesterday morning just as about to finish my shift i dropped a casting (man hole cover) and it caught my ankle. After some ffing and blinding i had a look but couldne see any damage so carried on until end of shift.

In the changing room i had another look at my ankle and there was just a graze so didnt think anything of it and went home.Anyway i got to get out of bed at around half 4 and my ankle has swollen up and is really painfull and stiff,I rang work to say i wouldnt be in and explain and it all went tits up from there.

I got taken to work this morning and examined and to plead my case as apparently i should have reported it.Then after after 2 hours down there i get told i no longer hav a job as what i had done was instant dismissal.

Pissed me right off as the first aider ws getting changed t the same time as me and i showed him and he never said anything.

Proper gutted as i liked that job lol

you do have to report all accidents no matter how minor when they happen.

There must be more to it than you have said as it doesn't sound like gross misconduct so would be a case for a warning but not dismissal? Have you had any other warnings ?

Edit: sorry just saw you were agency  :lipsrsealed:

No warnings or anything,I do understand about the reporting accidents etc but it was just a glancing knock and the same as the ones i probably get 20 times a week.

I just simply thought nothing of it as there was no damage so to speak of.

thats the problem with being agency they can get rid of you anytime they want, most likely because you called in sick due to an injury at work because they are possibly liable for work related injuries.

Does seem a little harsh though !

thats why more and more companies are using agencies as kerrse said they can just hire and fire with no worries it is wrong but thats just how the world of agencies work it would make more sense to keep a good worker on a short contract but they seem to get rid of the best ppl and use the half wits that are only good for fetching and carrying i dont mean that to sound bad but thats the reality

well it obviously wasnt just a "glancing knok and the same as the ones you get 20 times a week" due to the fact that your ankle swelled up and you had to ring it to take the day off. that is why you should report everything.

sorry to hear about you loosing your job though dude, personally i would have given you a warning or something. but hey im not a CEO or out so dont know how these things work

As said all accidents no matter how small should be reported and put in the accident book. Its the employees responsibility to make sure it happens. And if you don't but end up having time off due to a work accidents you will face the consequences...in my job I wouldn't be allowed back on site if I hurt myself at work.

Personally I would have told them that I twisted my ankle at home going up the stairs :lipsrsealed:

It costs a business a lot more thro agencies as the hiring company pays the agency a fee then has to pay the person also but I guess thats why business's go thro agency as they can hire and fire when they choose...
