hi all,
i had my agu about a year now just really got a strange problem i will explain!

here it goes

i was on my way home about 4 weeks ago with a civic type r sat on my arse so i gave it a bit of right foot started to run it down about a mile or so from my house got home turned it off got up next morning started her up within 20-30 seconds blue smoke out the back and could smell burning oil cleared after a few revs, drove for last 3 weeks just normal no real strain on engine as i work 28 miles away so just potter and not a thing!!! till the other day(monday) had a little play again left it to run down for a mile or so switched off started it and got blue smoke again after about 20-30 seconds of being started reved and cleared and aint smoked again since also it sat in my mates spray booth all day tues till weds morning started up and nothing smells abit rich but thats it!!!

spoke to chris at midlands vw he said  sounds like valve stem seals but im not to sure i do use some oil about 1/4 ltr every 500/600 miles but do have a leak in rocker cover so dunno if that contributing to it!

also thought it might be worth mentioning 6 weeks ago had the cat took off and a 3inch decat put on
someone else has said to me that i could have a block in the breather system and dragging oil through the intake system when driven abit harder and burning on start up

this only seems to be happening when i push the car a bit harder than normal use i would like to get this problem sorted before i bolt the ko3s on and go for a remap

would like to see what ideas you guys have could be the problem thanks in advance liam

It not overfilled with oil at all is it? Even slightly over can cause this especially when driven hard.

Or as suggested worn part in the turbo.

It sounds like valve stem seals, but I can have a look for you if your not too far.
If its not smoking on boost it's unlikely your turbo seals are gone.

im in birmingham mate so a little far lol dont smoke on boost dont smoke at all normal driving dont smoke on hard driving on when been driven hard cooled down 1-2 mile from my house then left overnight when i have started it in the morning puff of blue smoke thats it!

it might not be seals but it could be crack in the turbo

i work 12 hour shifts aswell so the car will be standing for 12 hours ill start it tonight wont be any smoke
surly if valve stems seals are shot  it would seap through in that amount of time and burn the oil

It depends what part of your turbo is cracked but a crack on the housing (most common) will not in anyway result in burning oil at all. Valve stem seal failure on 20vt engines are very common at your mileage. Typically it's worse when you have excessive vacuum such as when you go down a hill and your off the accelerator and in gear, this vacuum draws the oil through the valve guides where it collects until your back on the throttle again such as when your at the bottom of the hill where it will be burnt and give a blue smoke. It's not quite as you describe where oil will simply pour through your valve stem seals when your engine is off like a tap left running. When your engine is running on idle or downhill with the throttle closed this vacuum draws the oil through.

Try to get to the bottom of it, if it turns out to be your valve stem seals then chances are the majority of machine shops won't touch 20vt valve stem seals (and 2.7tt) because they are much smaller and they won't carry the removal tool needed, if that's the case you can just strip the head and send it to me and I'll remove them and fit your new ones for £4 per valve stem seal.

Best way to test it is on the road as described in my previous post. But if you have a fibre optic camera you can have a look at the piston's head for excessive carbon build up

Here's a 20vt piston I took out recently that had worn valve stems with 138000 miles
