Its worth getting it scanned with VagCom, it might show up something  :smiley:
Just dropped it off at th garage earlier, as I was driving it I encountered the issue first hand, the words ALTERNATOR WORKSHOP appeared and there was a loud beep every 3seconds. The car was still driving fine and after a few moments the error vanished.
I guess I'll see what the garage hav to say tomorrow.

update: the garage have had a look and it seems there is a correded wire in the fuse junction box thats sits on the battery, as soon as he said this i remembered an AA man mentioning i shuold take a look at it about a year back. They are putting a new one on and seeing if this helps.

always good to know, hopefully it wont happen again. good job i know a few mechanics, got the part at cost price and only 30 min labour. :-) Saved a bit there

Glad you found the problem. 
I'm just waiting for this to happen to ours, as the same fuse box on ours often feels "a bit warm".  What actually causes it to go pop?

no idea, i know f**k all about electrics. i just know that an AA man spotted an issue about a year back and I chose to ignore his advice.
just glad i got her back now.
