Importing lhd into uk?
« on: 29 April 2012, 21:20 »
Hi, I'm new to the forum and dont know whether this has been discussed before but I'll ask anyway.       Whats involved in registering a French LHD Mk 1 Golf GTI with DVLA and getting an English plate and what needs to be done to make it legal to drive here.     Lights/ speedo etc
I hope someone can help as I've jumped in with both feet and bought one........

Registering and taxing the vehicle

You can apply for registration at your nearest DVLA local office. The application takes about a week. There is no ‘over the counter’ service.

Find your nearest DVLA local office

You will need to take the following documents to the DVLA local office (photocopies or faxed copies are not acceptable):

completed application form V55/4 (for new vehicles) or V55/5 (for used vehicles)
a £55 registration fee (if applicable) and the required fee for the vehicle tax (cheques or postal orders made payable to DVLA Swansea)
a current British certificate of insurance
foreign registration document and any other papers relating to the vehicle
evidence showing the date the vehicle was collected (normally the invoice from the supplier)
    evidence of type approval
a current British MOT test certificate (if applicable)
the appropriate HM Revenue and Customs form
a 'Declaration that a vehicle is new' form V267 (if applicable), available for download or from a DVLA local office
documentation confirming your name and address (a list of acceptable identity documentation can be found on the link below)

Registering and taxing the vehicle won’t take place unless you have the necessary documentation. In some cases the DVLA local office may wish to see the vehicle to check its identity.

So find your DVLA local office just google it.
Before you receive a mark you need to insure the car under its VIN number or chassis no.
Then drive to MOT station.
Mine past without MPH you can get stickers temp if it worries you.
Headlamps you need RHT ones or get the sticker, but MOT regs have tighten up so just get them done!
Fog lights make sure it on the right side!
Job done when you have all documents go and get your mark which is the registration mark or V5! It takes a couple of weeks but your local DVLA will contact you once its all processed!

Mike you lazy git its in the quote above!
a £55 registration fee (if applicable) and the required fee for the vehicle tax (cheques or postal orders made payable to DVLA Swansea) a current British certificate of insurance.

Problem is once you have registered with DVLA you are in the system as a UK car so the facts are you need to pay them road tax on top of the mark fees.
I would have said you could still drive with French plates, but if the coppers stop you and your cars is on DVLA systems and you are running French plates/Uk mark you will be in a whole world of trouble seen as not paying for road tax.
TBF once you have your mark then you get the TAX disc then you go and get a set of British plates after as you will struggle. Just remember DVLA like to see original V5 equlivilant from the French DVLA.
