FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS ( CONT )
« on: 13 April 2003, 13:15 »
I posted a problem with my fuel pump system several weeks ago and after trying all suggestions suicide now beckons. The problem being that when turning on the ignition the pump runs for about 4 seconds and the relay clicks out. Putting a lamp tester in line to the supply to the relay shows the feed constant. There is a 5th pin on the relay marked 31b when putting a lamp on this and turning on the ignition it lights up dimly until the 4 seconds is up & the relay clicks out when it gets full supply. When putting a bridge lead across the relay the pump runs fine pulling about 2amps. Any ideas where 31b gets its supply from ??

I've had a look in the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual and have found they don't help much. The only reference I can find to 31 is the fuse: S31
Just going to have a quick look in the Mk2 GTI wiring diagrams in my Bentley, they might shed a little more light.

Best diagram I have found is this from a 1985 Golf GTI with CIS. If I remember correctly you had a 1983 cabrio? So hopefully this will be the same:-

There is a '31' which appears to be a ground, so should be a brown wire connected to that terminal in the back of the fusebox.
Hope that helps.
