Dash Battery light stays on

I left the ignition on in the garage,obviously the battery fully drained,when I recharged the battery, light on the dash stays red with ignition on and the safe starter can barely turn a torque.

check the voltage on the battery, if its flat and you deffo charged it, then buggered battery. replace and should be good again

Dead flat battery, sounds like plates shorting the battery out internally due to deep discharge. That drags your alternator down, resulting in the light staying on.

Where are you based? I have one from my old mk3 sitting around for sale - it's one year old and in good nick (brand battery not cheap Halfords one).

Voltage is readeing in the 10v range.
Could a battery still be nakered if the fluid indicator on it is green?

I would never trust them colour indicators in the battery,seems your bat is caput.

10V sounds very much like your battery is "kaputt" ....

Replace and you should be up and running again - as long as you don't deep discharge again.

Anything under about 11V indicates a dead cell or a chemistry change due to a deep discharge.

A Lead acid battery will go down to about 11.8V (IIRC) and stop supplying current if the load is high (i.e. lights left on). But of the load is light (alarm monitor voltage for example) the battery carries on supplying current until about 10V. This changes the chemistry and there is no coming back from that.

I know this from experience. Ex SWMBOs bike had an alarm that used to draw about 20 mA. She used to leave it months between riding it and that would normally guarantee to kill the battery.
