 Had the same thing on my Vento when I first bought it. Bought a scanner from  e-bay and reset it. The fault had been caused by removal of the steering wheel to replace the horn contact ring. Maybe you can sort yours by removing the battery lead for a while ?

you run the risk of damaging the airbag controller if you attempt to communicate with it using ebay cables.

That's nothing to do with the ebay cable as such but a problem with the software (i.e. VAGCOM/VCDS):

I am not aware of issues with that on mk3 Golfs at all.

different issue. i can fix the 6Q0 firmware bug by obd (although its sometimes simpler to find a used ecu) but good luck pulling anything useful from the 6N0 type with a fried eeprom

Well my cars gunna be mot'd at midland VW lol ...... So maybe you can pretend not to see the airbag light xD

dunno yet i haven't played with those to the same extent apart from the maxiscan stuff (which seems okay) too many variations to go through where as most of the hooky cables are based around the same bodged up design.
