I have grown VERY tiresome of my 1993 1.8 8v's performance and I was wondering if there is any way I can pep it up with a relative amount of easy? I am planning an engine swap once the bodywork is done, but right now, I need to do something to tide me over!

I read somewhere that fitting a mk2 gti 8v cam works?

I was also thinking if there is anyway I can swap throttle bodies from another engine, like the mk3 GTI 8v? Or maybe even Suzuki GSXR throttle bodies? I have found throttle body manifold kits for mk2 1.8 8v's would that fit my engine?

Also, is the mk2 gti cam pulley the same size as the mk3 1.8 8v? Would I have to change the cam belt size?

Cheers guys :)

Its a big old job to fit throttle bodies,  you need to fit them, set them up, fit an after market managment system, which you have to put together your self and programe the ECU.

GTI Cams will make little to no diffrence, If you want to cam it you need to go for real high lift cams on that engine, but they seem to have a fine line between little diffrence,  and massive diffrence but unable to run below 2500RPM without stalling, and the power band then shifts to 3000-8000rpm which is more that your engine will cope with.  Also causes valve float at that sort of duration which isnt ideal.

For what it will cost to get more power from yours, buy a donor car and drop an ABF in it.

I HATE MY ENGINE! lol, I will be going down the 1.8t or PD150 route in the end, I just can wait that long for more power. I wish my engine wasn't so pants!!

in the future don't buy a 1.8 8v with single point injection a golf  if you want big power...

Engine swap is the way to go

As I posted earlier get a donor car cheap and swap the engine, 16v or VR would be easy enough to sort.

Yeah, I know a 16v or VR lump would be a pretty easy route to follow, I want to put an engine that was never in the MK3 in the bay instead though! The truth of the matter is I won't be in the position to start an engine swap until next year (because I want to finish the bodywork, and all the brake upgrades etc first) and I just wanted to do something to help the situation in the meantime! Guess I'll just have to wait :/

May be worth putting the brake upgrade on hold until you decide which route you wanna take with the lump Dan. Problem is, if you need to go widetrack then your gonna need 5 stud from vr etc therefore that  nice expensive G60 setup you've just done will have been a waste of time.

Are there any reasons I would have to go wide track? I mean other than the the obvious, better for cornering etc? I will be getting a gti rear beam, front wishbones and ARB's anyway! Just to clear up my confusion, but what would I me changing to go wide track, and what would stop me from staying 4x100 PCD? I am planning on using the CL hubs already on the cat, with Ibiza Cupra or mk2 g60 rear brake setup and Cupra 305mm discs with Porsche Brembos up front :)

I think they have a different hub assembly, so driveshafts won't fit or something. I think you would need to get custom driveshafts made, but don't quote me on that. Don't think its done very often as its actually easier to go widetrack due to that, and brake upgrades easier to find..............maybe.  :undecided: Not entirely sure obviously, but I'm sure I read it somewhere! Ask on clubgti, sure someone will know get back to you with a proper answer there!
