gear box oil leak
« on: 05 June 2005, 11:42 »
hey there
i have a 1990 8v which had a persistant oil leak which was located to the driveshaft oil seal (passenger side).   So i bought a new seal, had a mechanic fit it, all was sorted for - erm 3 or 4 weeks then oil started pissin out again! same seal same prob.

So what's the best way to take it from here? No point in replacing the seal again. Where do you think the problem lies?  Would replacing the whole gearbox be the easiest option? Or is the driveshart the problem?

Any ideas?

Was it a genuine seal or a pattern part?  Might be worth having it apart and check the driveshaft where it goes through the seal, perhaps its damaged and knackering the seal?

If the driveshaft flange that the seal makes contact with is not perfectly smooth then the leak will continue.  The expensive way to fix this is to replace the driveshaft flange.  But, by not pushing the seal fully home, you can usually make it seal against a nice smooth and shiny part of the flange.  Worked for me.

thanx ppl.
forgot to mention that the gearbox wines in every gear, so replacing would be a good idea!

can get a second hand one for nowt. any other bits i should get while i'm there?

i don't have time to look into the problem properly (new baby!) so i'm just looking to replace the lot for a quick fix!   would gearbox with drive shaft be an easy swap?

i wrote off the black 8v last august, so thats availible as a part doner...
