Maf trouble
« on: 20 April 2012, 12:59 »
Hi I'm after some help with my mk4 golf gti I've been having a few idle problems looked on here and lots of people have mentioned the maf sensor so I've unplugged it and it seems to run lots better I've been out and got another Bosch sensor from my local auto factors put it on plugged it in started the car and still has the same problem but if I unplug it it runs fine again ?????

I've ordered another maf sensor just Incase this new one is faulty but any other ideas ??

it's possible/more likely that you have a boost pipe hanging off or other leak somewhere after the maf which is causing the idle problem, and unplugging the sensor is just masking that problem.

People really need to stop propagating the myth that better running when unplugging the MAF instantly diagnoses a MAF fault.

Scout could you describe what issues you are having in more detail?
I agree that it's more than likely a split pipe somewhere.

Yeah sure the idle goes very lumpy Jumping upand down below 1000 rpm then eventually will cut out and stall , this all started when I was on the motorway sitting about 65-70 mph then went to overtake one of britans brilliant Sunday drivers whilst doing so I felt a loss of power he about a second later it cleared and when I got off the motorway on the lights to the slip road it wouldn't tick over, driving home was not very easy as it would not move very well when boosting it would sort of have no power and not want to move .
Sorry it's not very clear as I'm not that mechanically minded I've just brought the car and a few days later it's gone wrong hope this gives you some sort of idea

Although it does help a bit, it doesn't really contain concrete enough to help a diagnosis. It could be one of a million things.
When you say you felt the loss of power, was it jerking like a misfire, or just didn't rev, or revved but didn't move?
At idle how much do the revs fluctuate?

As you say the car is new to you, the first things to do are:

a) Give it a service and clean the throttle body.
b) Scan the car for codes.

As you have purchased a Mk4, so you soon will be. Most reliable cars in the world, after you've replaced every single component that VW designed poorly.
