1993 2.0L 8v into mk2 GL???
« on: 18 April 2012, 12:59 »
Hi Guys,

Still no word on getting my old account details back so ill use this one for now!

Basically im looking at a pearler of a mk2, its a 1.8GL in white - 5 door. its an absolute stunner full service history 2 previous owners etc etc.

Well i currently have a 1993 2.0 8v mk3 that i wasgoing to sell but now im thinking of conversion. I have the full car its road worthy and runs sound so no bits would need to be sourced really.

1 - is it worth it?

2 - am i going to need any custom bits made up?

3 - will the mk3 ignition system, ecu etc etc fit and work without too much hassle if i have the full car and on standard management etc

4 - which gearbox would be best fitted?

Ive had quite a few Mk2's and ive replaced pretty much every single part on them in my time including numerous engine swaps in the past and im also a qualified deisel fitter so actually undertaking the work isnt a problem.

I'd really appreciate a bit of guidance. I have tried the search function but it didnt really come up trumps withanything that i found useful and from previous experience i know you guys have a wealth of info to share...

cheers brett

I really wouldn't bother for the increase in performance you won't see.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I dont see how its possible that you will not get a performance increase from a 1.8GL going up to a 2.0L 8v... in a smaller car that weighs less....

As far as i was aware you will get a fairly sizeable increase. It aint going to blow nobody's socks off i know that, but lets face it im going to get more fun out of the mk3 gti engine than the 1.8GL? And if ive already got both cars in working condition the GL is a spanker btw, there is absolutely no point in buying another gti engine instead i may aswell make use of what i have.

are you sure that there will be NO performance gains by upgrading from a 1.8 GL to a 2.0L gti????

What year is the GL?
Electrics would be a pain if it wasnt a 90-92 MK2 Golf, CE2 anything older you are better off getting a new fuse box and loom.
Why not do a 16ver from an ABF same amount of work but better poke?
What experience has told me is trying to use old spare parts to save money is a fools economy unless its like for like and straight forward?
being a GL which is possibly a Autobox just makes it even more grief unless you have all the bits for swap over from manual?

Its a 91 mate
and the reason is because i would have to buy a new engine etc i allready have the 2 cars for the swap so i need to buy nothing for the conversion.....

well considering both cars cost me less then £1200 and one is a minter full service history and mint inside and out etc id say i will be better off money wise. And.... after speaking to another known golf whizz it apears to prove to be a pretty good upgrade. obv 16v would be better but no point wasting money...

I believe the gearbox thats on the GL will be fine. it is Manual too i believe. I'll have to start putting pics up once month end has gone by and ive a bit of money to sort my phone and camera out. I will be doing the straight swap ill have to work on splicing the looms together but thats not too much issue.

and in the mean time looks like im gonna be reduced to a Mk4 GTI!!! FFS....

Well if I were you I'd sell the 8V GTI Golf3 and buy another Golf3 but 16V.  Should fit into your overall £1200 budget if you shop carefully.

As someone who's gone through 1.8 - 2.0 8V - 2.0 16V I can assure you that the first time you set foot into an ABF Golf2 you will regret your decision.

I hear what your saying mate. I've always had mk2's and my mates got an abf'd mk1 thats now a 20vt with about 340 bhp and ive driven both.

Surely theres no way on this planet im going to get a nice abf with tax and test so i can drive it home
for 350 sheets and i wont get no more for the 8v i dont think.
