MK 1 buyers guide/tips/advice?

Hi,

Sorry if I've missed a thread that already does this (if I have please point me in the right direction).  I've been away from GTI's for about 7 years and my last one was a MK2.  I'm hoping there is some advice etc...on this forum on price-condition, things to look out for, common faults and so on. I'm looking to make a purchase after a little research.

I hope someone can help me out and thanks in advance.

yh a few things but not meaning to tell u how 2 suck eggs check any rust near anything 2 do with fuel and dnt buy frm any twit that puts fuel from a 1936 sunbeam. nah but seriousley depending on how competent mechanic or body worker u r u can pick up a tatty one for a summer project for about £1000 any less walk away they r normally f**ked top of the range one about £4000 i would say check ebay i was lucky and brought mine mk1 golf gti cab 1988 with a full mot on it for £850 but the guy didnt have a clue what he had as it is easily worth double
