Driver's side electric window not working.

Does not work with the key nor does it work via the button. I can hear a clic when the buttons are pressed both up and down. What could be the cause???

Mine does that intermitantly.. right pain in the arris...

Could be something jamming it as the are sensitive to anything that may stop it from moving.  A safety featrure so you don't get your head stuck in the window  . Maybe just needs greased or worse scenario would be a new regulator.

Check the wires in the rubber sleeve between door and pillar as it's a common fault for these to break.

Very, very true. That's how I fixed mine.

If you can hear the motor click then it is more than likely the regulator has failed,the cable frays and get jammed,ive just replaced another in my own car ,this happened on both fronts now,still have a dead one at the rear

yup - +1 - drivers door loom!  Mine did the same - check out posts in my blog for pictures/examples.  Last summer ish.

The buttons do give off a clicking sound but if the clicking is from inside the door then it will be the motor as said

my passenger side rear has gone today...fisrt to go on this golf.. and she can stay like that till i get round to it as its a job i hate!! ( 3 went on my last car.. the joys of mk3 )

My o/s/r went, clicked like the OP said, broken wires making the motor work intermittently.

mk3's...... Good cars but old......
