Advice for Newbie
« on: 15 April 2012, 13:57 »
Hi guys,

Just replaced my 2003 Leon Cupra with a 2007 Golf GTI MKV, and was hoping for some tips on a few tweaks I want to make. My plan is do the following:

1) Get a VW dealer to retrofit cruise control - I hear this is simple and costs ~£150

2) Get a Dension Gateway 100 fitted - Should integrate nicely with the 6 CD mulichanger I hear

3) Bluefin DIY re-map - JKM seem to have a good price ~£400. I'm nervous for my dump valve diaphragm. Is a swap to an Audi S3 / type D unit essential if I remap to ~240Bhp?

4) Insurance from Greenlight - I heard something good about them and my current company wont touch chipped/modified cars

5)Hawk HPS brake pads - whenever the current ones need replacing

I would really appreciate advice on these changes. Please note that this is going to be a family car, so no big turbo, stiffer suspension, ride height drops, bigger wheels (I deliberately choose 17"). My missus didn't like the ride in the Leon Cupra (unmodified), and I decided not to get an Edition 30 as this is lower - sacrifices I make to keep happy wife :(

Sorry to hear that you didn't get an ed30

For your audio, if you can pick up an RNS510 thats what I would be going for :afro:

Thanks jeynesey,

RNS 510 looks sweet, but @£600-£700 fitted its a lot more than the Dension. Admittedly you get more for the extra cash.

I've not heard of Kinetic Tuning before, and it looks like they cover Wales/South West, and I'm in the East Midlands. Someone recommended R-Tech Power, which are closer and cost ~£200 vs. ~£400 for the Bluefin. Need to think it through, but I like the idea that I can revert easily with the Bluefin when I sell it or if the wife is driving in the snow

I cant comment on bluefin as Iv'e never driven anything that has one of their maps...

I can fully recommend Kinetic tuning, give them a bell to see what area they can cover for you, you ont regret it

I had my mk4 mapped by R-tech and they offer very good customer service also :afro:

Bluefin is effectively a Superchip remap isn't it? its just that its easily reversible, or am I missing something?

Nope but a remap will be cheaper and can be the best long term bet, try one of the forum sponsors.

Bluefin is the name of the device supplied by Superchips and allows you to return your vehicle to stock; its NO different to a remap

Yes a remap is cheaper but if you want to be able to switch your car back to stock then a device such as the Bluefin is ideal.  Other companies provide something called an Alientech box and re-brand it

I had a bluefin for my Gti. When I swapped the car last month I simply replaced the original map using the bluefin handset before trading in.  The handset was then sent to superchips where they reset it and posted it back the next day.  I now have used it on my new car, very simple.
Currently digging a bunker.
