Oil burning?

Hi Guys

Yet another problem. Went about 500 miles in the cab this week, discovered the oil had deterioriated about 1/3 of the level. obviously this isnt normaly.

Possible causes? Head gasket?

have you had a good look round for a leak? does your coolent smell funny?

As funky says check for leaks first but was a lot of the 500 miles at speed ? i.e. motorway ? For example, I left Leeds to go to Leicester to meet gti89 to go to inters, checked oil before I left from Leeds all ok, checked oil before I set off to inters from Leicester all ok, when I got back to Leicester I checked the oil before I set off back to Leeds again and I had to top it up about 1/2 - 1/3 of a litre. Point I'm making is if you are using a thin oil (I use VAG Quantum synta silver) then when you work the engine hard as my journey did then you can use quite a bit of oil.  :undecided:

i Had the same drove from brum to telford parked on curb oil started leaking out and my coolent goes down quick

Yeah Gibby it was all at high speed- 60 to 100mph all the way

So is it normal? :huh:

Same happens with me when I blast it as per my thread above, fair distance on fast roads from Leeds to Ipswich via Leicester, especially if you use a thin oil so I'd say yes it'snormal. Top it up and keep an eye on it when you are driving around town, if it's still being used as fast, then you may have a problem, if it's ok in normal conditions then you should be ok.  :smiley:
