Smokey!

Hi,

I have a 91 8v GTi (112000 miles) and the bloody car has just started to smoke on tick over, and when driving along at a steady pace. It doesn't do it when it is getting thrashed though!

I have come to the conclusion it is the stem seals but i only had these done about 6-8 months ago! They cant go that quickly can they?

Any ideas anyone?

I would say its more likely the piston rings are worn, The valve guides also could be worn.

Yep i reckon it might the valve guides, surely it would smoke more when you boot it if it were the rings. Surely you got the guides checked for play when the seals were done? Do compression test, if the results are poor add a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder , if they improve then its the rings.
