Would have thought welding a bar across the donor strut tops would have been a good idea for when you come to put them on yours. It would make it a lot easier to get the geometry right. you could just position it 1" higher and weld both side on. Now you got to mess about getting it right on both sides.

You've made a easy job hard in my eyes

Hmm I've gotta agree, bracing them up together before removal would have helped the transfer dramatically.

That my friends is probably true but as I'm not doing the work I can't take the blame for how something is being done. However I know how good the work is that Matt does and have plenty of faith that he has a plan to do what he is doing.

All will be right in the end there is no step by step guide for this so perhaps the way he is going to do it is as easy as the way you have explained.

Guess the next updates will show this

I think the only way you could weld it and be sure the geometry is all correct is to put the shell on a jig, not something you want to be A) guessing or B) lining it up be eye and thinking that is close enough.

Get it wrong and it will affect tyre wear and how the car drives and feels

Going to be all the cock I fear, seems complete madness to me to take what at the moment is a nice car and come very close to ruining it all in the name of scene points / parking your sump on the floor.

Sorry to be harsh but your taking a lot of strength away from the shell and yes he may know what he is doing but can he put all that strength back in.

It may also be worth speaking to your insurance company, they may ask / need an engineers report to confirm the standard of work.

I here what your all saying but please, scene points!!!!

This isnt about being 'scene' this is about getting my car to sit how I have always visioned it too!!!

These jobs arent carried out all of the time but it's quite possible that you have seen cars that look good and haven't realised that these sort of jobs have been carried out on them. It's just that with this one I'm showing you what is being done!!!

There is many ways to carry out the work he may make a bracket off the top of the shock and weld to the top of the chassis so that it's still in the correct place, therefore not adjusting the shock position etc.

This is serious modification that a lot of people wouldn't do through cost or skill or just because it's the uk. The yanks have been chopping roofs etc etc etc for years and these cars end up running bloody v8s!!!! If they can chop roofs and still have a structural car then I'm sure my strut tops can be done!!! Safely!!!

Wait for the work to be done before saying its guna be all cock. This isn't a mickey mouse build its just a lot more extreme than most so please open your minds to a build that's a bit different!!

Please don't take offence I appreciate the comments but just wait til she's complete. I'm the one that's going to be driving it and will do un-afraid

Should be ok as is - when they did James fords on his mk3, they made a small jig on each side which ensured the new strut tops went in straight.

Worst case scenario - as long as the heights are both the same, but not in straight you can use adjustable top mounts to pull the tops of the bags where you want them.

Keep on chopping, it's only metal

  • Been there...Done that...
Extending strut tops is very possible. Many track day enthusiasts do it.

Its usually done with custom top mounts as it gives some more adjustability.

You do seem to get the Health & safety scene police on here.

See here on a mk2. Might give you an idea.

That is a different ballgame to cutting the complete strut tower out  :undecided:

2nd one isn;t - it's exactly what will be happening.

Here's the post of James having his done, not the best guide, but should give you some idea as to what you can expect.
