idling problems on mk2
« on: 30 September 2003, 07:32 »
I have an 85 GTI and seem to be experiencing stalling problems.  The car runs better when its cold out or when the engine is cold, but if ive been reving or driving for awhile,  the idle dips and recovers about 3 times before idling normal when i come to stops (throwing the clutch in)(especially going downhill)  sometime infrequently it stalls. i have had my friend done an idle check and my idle is fine, im just thinking th compresson may be down, it has 180000 km.

i also seem to notice my acceleration is crap compared to on paper,  i only can get to 100 in about 10 sec.  im getting a new clutch put in as the old one was worm out im hoping that will help.  maybe its due to what i think may be low compression,  maybe its not worht it for an engine rebuild as i dont know how much ti would be.

I pressume that's km/h.  I guess you'd not be unhappy if it were mph!

Have you checked all the basics ie. ignition timing, mixture. I would definately get it compression tested.

ive gotten the basics done,  pressures seem t obe low,  if i get the engine compression tested could that be a reason for poor idling at stops?   if its compression is low,  whats the next step?

If compression is a problem then depends if is bottom or top end of the engine. Do the test, its easy enough, and post the results.

I had a similar problem on my '91 8 valve turned out to be a sticking valve , if you get a compresion check you'll find out

hope this helps
