broke the passats turbo
« on: 12 April 2012, 00:22 »
just for a bit of fun   take bets on what i've broken now.

the victim is 192k mile 150 bhp 1.8 T apu lump in a passat.     its driveing like a 1.8 NA 2ov now in other words gutless, but there is no ECU light or any stored fault codes.   my personal theory is the wastegate has fallen appart and is proaby now resideing in the cat somewhere as it's stopped ratteling

My guess is a head bolt has snapped or a wheel spacer has exploded.

would appear the turbo's dead,  no movement in shaft at all, not even round and round   - oops

the supriseing thing is  it's still driveing.    its got to do some more as well as it's with me on the IOW atm

its been down on power for a while but i was expecting the usual dead DV or stuck wastegate but been that busy not had chance to look at it and its been showing any sings of inpending boom.  only when arrived at DH's i actulay lifted the bonnet and had a proper poke about under the bonnet.

never had a turbo fail like that before with the shaft stuck solid...   its even kept the oil in  best it carry on for a bit    tho it was getting very tempting to put a socket on teh shaft and see just how siezed it is

Sounds like you are having a good time and bad mate!
Say hi to Chuff & DH for me I think he is over there aswell?
Mine the viens had completely closed and the impella was siezed aswell.
The thing about the Passats the ECU does a fantastic job of keeping you going in limp mode.
I wouldn't run it too long though the compression is just too low for anything long term.
Plus if any shafts have shat itself along the way the bits of swarf can go down the injection system, so no forcing her, but you know that anyways Danny so drive it very slowly or get some of the boys to take it out and see if you can asses it from there good luck on IOW  :undecided:

may go look for a 2nd hand unit about now,  looked at 2nd hand units on ebay and there way to expensive for what they are proably better off getting a pikey copy for about the same price, or a proper rebuild kit that includes new shafts and inpellers and rebuild my siezed unit,  if i get bored i'll raid the parts shelf at work and make a diffrent turbo fit
